A bee tower in the green
Our bee tower “Bienenturm” is slowly being taken over by the plants around it, and I am enjoying it, as are the bees who have been living there since 2019 without being disturbed. The Asian hornets bother us a little, but we have installed a hornet hotel on the site “there will check in but there won’t check out”. learn more…

Protecting the hive from heat waves
Almost all of our hives are now in shady locations, either under trees or in places where the sun is not beating down all day. This BeeTower is insulated inside with a thick layer of wood and reed, but the roof becomes a frying pan especially on very hot days and conducts the heat downwards. All our Beetowers have a thick insulation of reed and wood around the brood chamber anyway. More information can be found here under Bee Towers. In such a heat and full sun location, gable roofs would be better and especially a device to soften the sun’s rays. The gable roof, like the one on our Dadant Bee Tower,…

An unexpected visit to our bee tower…
This is one of the quietest places on our property, where you can spend hours watching the bees and other insects coming in and out of our wild meadow. A great place to meditate and relax, I visit it several times a day at any time of the year. Sometimes there are unexpected great surprises

A classic Warré hive becomes a log hive …
Our Warré BeeTowers with the reed insulation and the wooden rings have proven themselves very well in the now almost 2 years. Two towers are now occupied with strong bee colonies from natural swarms and the long honeycomb aisles built in one have already arrived at the bottom of the flight hole. In 2023 we will harvest some honey from a tower where a lower Warré element of 10 cm height was recently placed on top. Compared to the Zeidler log hives, reed towers are much lighter and therefore more mobile, which is their advantage over the weighty log hives and tree hollow simulations made of solid wood. Until now, the…

Multifunction observation hatch
Our Warré bee tower “Langer Lulatsch” now get on the back a multifunction observation hatch. So you can film the honeycomb construction with the cell phone from below and follow the development of the honeycomb construction. In this bee tower where we had placed this device only afterwards the bees were faster and one can film now no longer from below. It is sufficient to note that the colony has built very well and is full of life energy. The bees in our Voirnot bee tower where I have provided such a function from the beginning will be possible even longer; because there lives a very small colony which must probably hurry…
